The Greek polis: citizenship and experiment

City-states blended cult, territory, and politics — with sharp internal limits.

Across archaic and classical Greece, poleis differed sharply — Athens, Sparta, and many others.

When celebrating Athenian democracy, remember exclusions: women (in typical frameworks), many residents, and enslaved people. Western political vocabulary partly stems from here — always historically situated and contested.
